Sewer Connections

Picture
What is it?
If all or part of your septic system needs to be replaced and your property is within 200 feet of the city sewer main, you will be required to connect to the sewer. Your home or building's sewer will be connected to the sewer main (large pipe often running under the street) via a lateral pipe extending from the home or building across the property line, and then into the main. This lateral is used to connect your property’s drains and any existing drains to the sewer system. For each lateral line installed there is a cleanout. The cleanout allows you to access the line to clear clogs. In some cases, a cleanout may be located in the yard near your home or in your backyard, if the sewer main runs behind the house.

Connecting to the City Sewer System
Your sewer connection must be installed in accordance with the San Bernardino County Plumbing Code, therefore a licensed contractor will have to install the onsite piping and abandon the septic tank for each property owner.

Septic Tank Abandonment is required after your building is connected to the sewer system and your septic tank must be properly abandoned. All contents of the tank will be pumped out. If the tank is made of plastic or metal, the empty tank will be hauled away and disposed of. If the tank is made of concrete, a hole will be knocked in the bottom and the sides will be collapsed. Then it will be backfilled with dirt.

Multiple inspections will be required along the way. The number of them will depend on the complexity of the connection. After the final inspection by the city or county inspector, the area will be backfilled and graded smooth.

It sounds like a lot to remember, but we do most of the work for you. Once you apply and pay for the sewer connection fees with the city, we do the rest including scheduling all of the necessary inspections.
